Prosperous future for Brazilian riders

Although there were about 30 entries in the national part in Porto Alegre, only 5 riders competed in the CDI in Porto Alegre in Brazil at Intermediate level. Brazilian Grand Prix-riders Antonio Luiz Vasconcelos Macedo and Jorge Ferreira da Rocha competed in the same weekend in Saumur, France, Europe, so no Brazilian competitors at Grand Prix level was left on home soil for their own home show. “But a couple of very good Brazilian riders who competed Lusitano horses have in my opinion a promising future in dressage!”, judge Maribel Alonso de Quinzanos from Mexico commented. “This is the more promising, as Brazil has the second largest herd of horses in the world, including Lusitanos, Machadores, Paso Fino, Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods”, De Quinzanos continued.

Distances and restrictions in South-America causes problems

One of the problems in the South-American continent is the huge distances that people have to travel in order to arrive at one of the international horseshows. In the case of Porto Alegre, competitors coming from Sao Paolo had to travel 1.500 kilometers (about 937,5 miles) to arrive there...
Some countries like Chile were not able to get there at all, because Argentina unfortunately closed the borders and possibility for horses to travel through Argentina to Brazil. Some riders from Argentina and Uruguay took part in the competition with borrowed horses, all at national level tests. Argentine rider Inés Juan took even part in the CDI with a borrowed horse.
On the one hand a changed attitude of the riders concerned taking time and effort to compete will allow some growth of dressage in South-America. “On the other hand we really need the help of the FEI to help us to untie this sanitary and in most cases absurd restrictions!”, Mexican judge Maribel Alonso de Quinzanos commented. Organiser Mr Alexandre Leão added: “Porto Alegre has more or less an advantage as being considered a border city, near Uruguay, Argentina, São Paulo, Paraná and Rio de Janeiro, the dressage centers in South America. As the competitors had to cope with the distance and sanitary issues, we offered at the show a very comfortable environment.”

Mr Johannpeter appreciated sponsor

The show in Porto Alegre was sponsored by Mr Jorge Gerdau Johannpeter, a worldwide oriented horseman with a long relationship to equestrian sports. As Mr Johannpeter is one of the biggest Holstein breeders in the world, he also supports today the showjumper Bernardo Resende Alves and Pessoa´s stables. “We are happy to have his sponsorship in our show and competition, as it means an important possibility to gather all riders in the south hemisphere, including Brasil, Chile, Uruguai and Paraguai”, Mr Alexandre Leão of the Organisation Committee commented. “I feel this is an important initiative for the sport.”

*** By exception, dressagedirect gives the results of the intermediate classes as well, to help the dressage in South-America in its ambition to grow and develop ***
