Ever since the introduction of the World Cup for Jumping Riders in 1978 and its consequent success-story, supporters of eventing, dressage and driving did speak of similar World Cup Series in their discipline. Eventing is still in discussion stage. But the Dressage World Cup became a reality in 1985.
International judges Wolfgang Niggli (SUI), Jaap Pot (NED), Johanna Hall (GB) and Heinz Schütte (GER), Fritz Widmer of the FEI and World Cup Director showjumping Max Ammann were present at the ‘founders-meeting’ in December 1984.
It was decided to create an European League with the top ten riders to qualify for the Final and to give one spot in the Final each to the USA and Canada.
